The milk used in Made Fair ice cream is from our own dairy herd on our farm in southern Scotland.  We think our cows are among the happiest in the country, enjoying the spectacular countryside and the lush green grass of our organic dairy farm.  The organic cream we use comes from farmers who are members of the UK Organic Milk Suppliers Co-operative. 

Making a difference

Rainton Farm in the beautiful Galloway countryside is the home of Made Fair ice cream and Rainton has been certified as an organic farm since 2001.  Our conversion to organic farming has seen the return of farming practices which benefit wildlife rather than threaten it, and our newly planted hedgerows and well maintained dykes provide a haven for wildlife.  Because we no longer use pesticides or herbicides wildflowers thrive in our pastures and offer safe refuge to countless bumblebees, dragonflies and butterflies.

In the last six years we have greatly increased our woodland by planting over 30,000 native broadleaf trees which are now developing into fully-fledged young forests, extending their range by naturally re-seeding themselves and providing nesting places for around 60 species of native and migrant birds.   The hands-on approach of organic farming also benefits people, and it means we're providing more employment for our rural community than a mechanized farm would.

But the most important benefits have been in our animals' welfare.  We have roughly half as many sheep and cows as we had in our pre-organic days which gives us greater contact with each animal and a much better chance of stopping diseases.  Our animals are bred here on the farm and are allowed to develop their own resistance to disease, reducing their reliance on expensive medicines which might eventually find their way into the milk produced.  Through preventative stock and land management techniques we have done away with mass vaccinations and have reduced our antibiotic use by around 90%.
